Licensing
The Nelson County Animal Control Ordinance requires that cats and dogs in the county be licensed annually. The purpose is to provide an identification tag for pets, so that a pet’s owner can be quickly identified and located. County pet licenses must be renewed in January each year. The cost of a yearly license is $5 per pet that has been altered, $20 per pet that is unaltered. Other license options include, $30 lifetime license for pets that are microchipped, and a $15 multipet license for owner’s that have 4 or more pets that have all been altered.
In addition to a county license, state law requires that dogs, cats, and ferrets be vaccinated for rabies. Vaccinated pets are also supposed to display a rabies tag. Consult with your veterinarian for more information regarding rabies vaccination and licensing.
You may print out and mail an application with the appropriate fee, or you may apply in person at the Nelson County Animal Shelter Monday-Friday 8am-4pm, Saturday 8am-2pm.
